Compagnon, Jerome Thibouville-Lamy

French Mirecourt, circa 1890

This viola at 15 ¾ inches is super comfortable to play and is wonderfully resonant with a well-aged sound. Made in Mirecourt France by the JTL firm towards the very end of the 19th century, it is a great choice as an instrument for all kinds of playing.

Priced similarly to newer instruments, the sound of this viola is sure to deliver to violists looking for the sound of an older instrument in fine condition.

E.L. Edler

American, circa 1960

If you are looking for a larger viola with a rich full character to the sound, this Edler viola is a great choice.  Son of violin maker J.L. Henry Edler, this viola was made in Boston in the 1960’s. At 16 ½ inches, it is well proportioned in the upper bouts to allow easy access to the upper positions.

A very characteristic example of American viola making, it is made with thoughtful craftsmanship and a dark varnish over well-chosen flamed maple and spruce.
